Walmart to Close 22 U.S. Stores in 2025 Amid Business Restructuring

In a strategic move to realign its retail operations, Walmart has announced the planned closure of 22 stores across the United States in 2025. The decision follows a review of store performance and reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and focus on areas of growth, particularly in digital and more profitable markets.

The closures span multiple states, including four locations in Chicago and another in Richmond, Virginia. The Richmond store, located on Brook Road, is scheduled to close its doors permanently on July 28.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Brook Road Neighborhood Market location,” said Walmart spokesperson Felicia McCranie in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to serve the Richmond community through our other nearby stores and online services.”

Walmart cited underperformance as the primary reason for shuttering the selected locations. Although the company did not release the full list of all 22 stores affected, it emphasized that each closure followed a careful analysis of individual store performance, customer needs, and long-term sustainability.

“This decision was not made lightly,” the statement continued. “We understand the impact this can have on associates and the community. Our priority is to support employees during the transition and help them find opportunities at nearby Walmart locations whenever possible.”

Industry-Wide Shift

Walmart’s move mirrors a broader trend in the retail industry, where companies are reassessing their physical store footprints. As consumer shopping habits evolve—fueled by the convenience of online purchasing and home delivery—retailers are under increasing pressure to adapt their models to match demand.
