Punished To Review Their Cases

A group of current and former FBI employees who say they faced retaliation after raising concerns about internal practices are now appealing to new FBI Director Kash Patel for a fresh review of their cases.

In early March, the organization Empower Oversight sent a letter to Samuel Ramer, the FBI’s general counsel, asking for assistance regarding what they describe as improper treatment of whistleblowers. Among those seeking a review are FBI agents and employees Garret O’Boyle, Marcus Allen, Stephen Friend, Zach Schofftsall, Monica Shillingburg, and Michael Zummer, according to a report by Just The News.

In addition to the named individuals, the letter also referenced four additional clients whose identities remain redacted. One of these individuals reportedly has information related to their time working under former FBI official Peter Strzok.

One of the cases drawing particular attention involves Marcus Allen, a staff operations specialist based in the FBI’s Charlotte Division. According to the letter, Allen had his security clearance suspended after questioning whether then-Director Christopher Wray had provided fully accurate testimony to Congress. Other concerns cited included Allen’s personal views on the COVID-19 vaccine.

Following the suspension of his clearance, Allen was placed on indefinite unpaid leave. Empower Oversight stated that while a settlement was eventually reached regarding Allen’s case, the FBI has not fully met its obligations under the agreement. Issues still outstanding reportedly include corrections to Allen’s W2 tax forms and compensation for owed leave.

The whistleblowers and their advocates are hopeful that under the new leadership of Director Patel, their cases will be thoroughly re-examined, and that steps will be taken to resolve any remaining issues.

Empower Oversight emphasized the importance of ensuring that employees who raise good-faith concerns are protected and that whistleblower rights are upheld within the agency.

As of now, the FBI has not issued a public response regarding the requests for review.
