Heartbreak As Athlete Dies During Brooklyn Half Marathon

Tragically, 31-year-old Charles Rogers from Manhattan died after collapsing during the Brooklyn Half Marathon. He suffered cardiac arrest around mile 8, at Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue, and despite emergency CPR and being rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, he could not be saved.

Rogers was running the race for the first time and was fundraising for Team for Kids, a New York Road Runners charity promoting healthy habits in youth. He had worked at Verizon as a Small Medium Business Specialist since 2020.

His wife, Sydney, confirmed his passing and described him as someone who gave his all in everything he did. NYRR expressed deep condolences and emphasized their commitment to runner safety, noting that extra medical support had been in place during the event.

This year’s race, which featured over 28,000 participants, started at the Brooklyn Museum and ended at the Coney Island Boardwalk. A comment on Rogers’ final post read: “Thank you for supporting Team for Kids and giving your life for the love of running. You will be missed.”
