Over Social Media Post

The U.S. Secret Service recently interviewed a former FBI director following a social media post that sparked controversy over its perceived meaning. The post featured an image of seashells arranged in a pattern that some interpreted as the numbers “86 47.”

The photo, shared on Instagram, was captioned, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.” While the image was later removed, the numbers led to public speculation due to the dual meanings they may carry. In informal U.S. slang, “86” can mean to remove or reject something, and in some contexts, it has more extreme connotations. Meanwhile, “47” is believed by some to refer to the 47th president of the United States.

Following the post, some individuals expressed concern about its potential interpretation, prompting the Secret Service—tasked with protecting national leaders—to conduct an interview as part of standard precautionary measures. There has been no confirmation of any further action resulting from the inquiry.

The former FBI director explained that the post was intended as a political message, not as a call to violence, and stated he was unaware that the number combination could be interpreted as such. “I had no idea that some people connected those figures to violence,” he said. “I never thought of it, but I’m against all forms of violence, so I removed the post.”

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the post is part of an ongoing review but did not elaborate on whether further investigation or actions are underway.

This incident highlights the complexities of digital communication and the heightened scrutiny that can follow posts by high-profile individuals—especially when interpreted in multiple ways by different audiences.
