Be A Little Meaner

Gov. Tim Walz Urges Boldness, Energy in Public Leadership Tour

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, recently in the national spotlight as part of a cross-country speaking tour, made headlines during a spirited appearance in South Carolina. While addressing an energized crowd, Walz called for more passion and assertiveness in leadership, using his platform to inspire stronger responses to challenges facing the country.

At a state convention event in Columbia, Walz encouraged attendees to embrace what he described as a “fiercer” approach to public discourse.

“Maybe it’s time for us to be a little meaner, a little bit more fierce,” he told the crowd, drawing enthusiastic applause. “The thing that bothers a teacher more than anything is to watch a bully. And when it’s an adult, you push back hard.”

Though his remarks included direct language, Walz emphasized that his message was about resilience and standing up for values, particularly in difficult times. He reflected on the importance of staying joyful while being firm in principles, saying, “Damnit, we should be able to have some fun and be joyful.”

Walz also highlighted his respect for former running mate Kamala Harris, describing her as “well-accomplished” and a leader he would be happy to see take the spotlight again. “Damnit, I would love to turn on the TV and see her instead of what we see every day,” he said, drawing more cheers.

Eyeing the Road Ahead
Although Walz has not officially declared plans for 2028, many observers view his national appearances as early steps toward a future presidential bid. His current term as governor is expected to continue through next year, and he’s widely anticipated to seek re-election before making any moves toward a national campaign.

“I’m focused on finishing the budget in Minnesota first,” he told reporters, adding that most remaining work would be handled by legislative staff in the final days of the session. “We’ll be done,” he said with confidence.

A Broader Message
His South Carolina stop—part of a tour that also includes California—comes as influential Democratic states begin positioning for the next primary cycle. The events offer Walz a chance to build connections and test the waters with voters and party leaders.

“Gov. Walz resonates deeply with Democrats here in SC,” the South Carolina Democratic Party wrote in a recent post. U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, a longtime figure in national politics, extended the invitation for Walz to speak and will also host him at his annual community fish fry event.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, another leader seen as a rising figure on the national stage, will also speak at this weekend’s events.

Looking Beyond the Campaign
Regardless of future political aspirations, Walz’s recent appearances focus on community, connection, and courage in leadership. His message is one of bold engagement—encouraging people to stand up, speak out, and still find joy in the process of public service.

Whether or not he ultimately seeks higher office, the Minnesota governor has made it clear that he intends to be part of shaping the conversation going forward.
