Trump Blasts Greta Thunberg After Her Detainment by Israeli Forces: “She Needs Anger Management”

What began as a humanitarian mission has turned into a firestorm of global controversy—and now, former President Donald Trump has entered the fray with pointed words aimed directly at Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

In typical Trump fashion, the former president didn’t hold back when asked about Thunberg’s recent detainment by Israeli forces in international waters. His sharp response has only added fuel to an already intense debate, one centered on humanitarian aid, international law, and the clash of global personalities.

The Incident That Sparked Global Outrage
The controversy began earlier this week when Greta Thunberg joined a group of pro-Palestinian activists aboard a civilian aid vessel organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC). The boat, which carried supplies including food, baby formula, and medical equipment, was en route to Gaza—a region still under a strict Israeli blockade.

As the boat sailed through international waters, it was intercepted and boarded by the Israeli Navy, who claimed it had violated the naval blockade that has been in place since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007.

Thunberg and several others were taken into custody and transported to an Israeli port, sparking accusations of “kidnapping” from the activists and their supporters.

Greta’s Video Statement: “We’ve Been Kidnapped”
In a video recorded before the boat was fully boarded—later released by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition—Thunberg addressed the world calmly but firmly.

“If you see this video,” she said, “we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel.”

The footage quickly went viral, garnering millions of views across social media platforms and triggering heated reactions from both supporters and critics alike.

Trump’s Response: “She’s a Strange Person”
When asked about the situation during a press briefing on June 10, former President Trump—never one to miss an opportunity to take a jab—responded with a scathing critique of Thunberg.

“Well, she’s a strange person,” Trump said. “She’s a young, angry person. I don’t know if it’s real anger—it’s hard to believe, actually. But I saw what happened. She’s certainly different. Anger management. I think she has to go to an anger management class. That’s my primary recommendation for her.”

Reporters then pressed him about Thunberg’s accusation that she had been “kidnapped” by Israeli forces.

Trump’s reaction?

He scoffed, shook his head, and said, “I think Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg.”

When a journalist confirmed that Thunberg had indeed used the term “kidnapped,” Trump remained dismissive. His message was clear: he wasn’t buying it.

The Aid Boat and Its Passengers
Greta wasn’t alone on the intercepted boat. Other prominent figures aboard the humanitarian mission included:

Rima Hassan, Member of the European Parliament
Yanis Mhamdi, a journalist
Omar Faiad, Al Jazeera presenter
Yasemin Acar and Thiago Ávila, FFC organizers
The group has been outspoken in its criticism of Israel’s blockade and ongoing military operations in Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 54,000 people have died since the conflict escalated last October, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel that killed over 1,200 and resulted in hundreds being taken hostage.

Israel Prepares to Deport the Activists
Following the boat’s seizure, Israeli authorities moved the detained activists to an airport in Tel Aviv. According to The Guardian, the group—including Thunberg—is being prepared for deportation.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry downplayed the situation, posting on X (formerly Twitter):

“All the passengers of the ‘selfie yacht’ are safe and unharmed. They were provided with sandwiches and water. The show is over.”

The phrase “selfie yacht” has since sparked backlash, with critics accusing the Israeli government of mocking the activists while downplaying the seriousness of the humanitarian mission.

Greta’s Defiant Response
Thunberg, never one to remain silent, fired back with a heartfelt message on Instagram shortly after her detainment:

“I’m here because the world cannot be silent bystanders when there is a livestream genocide going on. Everyone who has the opportunity to do something has a moral duty to do so. So that’s why we have to keep trying to stand in solidarity with you.”

Her words drew both praise and condemnation online. Supporters hailed her courage and commitment. Detractors—including Trump—viewed her activism as radical, inflammatory, or misguided.
