Alan Jackson Fights Back Tears in Emotional Tribute to His Late Father During One of His Final Shows

A Heartfelt Farewell
Alan Jackson’s farewell tour has been packed with unforgettable performances, but one particular moment in Orlando, Florida, stood out as one of the most emotional of his career. While singing his heartfelt song “Drive,” the legendary country singer struggled to hold back tears as he honored his late father, Eugene Jackson.

The 66-year-old country icon has always been known for his deeply personal songwriting, but this performance was especially poignant. Written in 2002 following his father’s passing in 2000, “Drive” tells the story of cherished childhood memories spent behind the wheel with his dad. As Jackson sang, his voice wavered, and the audience could feel the raw emotion pouring from him.

A Personal Health Battle
Jackson has been open about his ongoing battle with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a genetic neurological disorder that affects the nerves in his arms, hands, legs, and feet. In a 2021 interview with Jenna Bush Hager on Today, he shared the struggles he has faced for over a decade.

“I have this neuropathy and neurological disease. It’s genetic, something I inherited from my daddy…There’s no cure for it, but it’s been affecting me for years,” Jackson revealed.

The condition, which runs in his family, has made performing increasingly difficult. Both his grandmother and older sister have also battled CMT. “It’s getting more and more obvious. And I know I’m stumbling around on stage,” Jackson admitted. “Now I’m having a little trouble balancing, even in front of the microphone, and so I just feel very uncomfortable.”

One More for the Road
Despite his health challenges, Jackson refused to let the disease define his career. In 2022, he embarked on a 16-show tour titled Last Call: One More for the Road, emphasizing that it was not necessarily a farewell tour.

“I’m not saying I won’t be able to tour. I’ll try to do as much as I can,” he said. “I don’t want people to be sad for me. It’s just part of life.”

After taking some time off, Jackson realized he wasn’t quite ready to leave the stage for good. In May 2024, he extended the tour, performing what would be his final run of shows, marking a bittersweet conclusion to a career spanning more than three decades.

“Some of the best times are had right at last call,” he remarked. “And this is one last call that you don’t want to miss!”

An Emotional Performance
As the tour nears its final date—May 17, 2025, in Milwaukee—each show has been filled with deep emotions, but his performance of “Drive” in Orlando was truly unforgettable.

Under the soft glow of stage lights, Jackson leaned against a stool for support, his voice trembling as he sang. The song, a tribute to his late father, resonated deeply with the audience. As he reached the final chorus, Jackson turned away from the microphone, visibly overwhelmed by emotion. The crowd erupted in applause, their cheers lifting him in a moment of pure connection.

“This is a song I wrote quite a few years ago when my daddy passed away,” he told the audience. “I wanted to write something special for him, not just another sad song about loss. I thought about growing up and how all I ever wanted to do was drive something. He taught me how, and that’s what this song is about.”

As he continues his final shows, fans cherish every moment, knowing this tour marks the end of an era. While Jackson may soon step away from live performances, his legacy is far from over. His timeless music will continue to inspire generations, ensuring his place in country music history.
