Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk’s involvement in a new U.S. government advisory role has raised questions during a recent White House press briefing, with reporters seeking clarification about his status and access to classified information.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Musk is serving as a special government employee—a designation used for temporary federal roles—and emphasized that he has complied with all applicable federal laws. When asked whether Musk or members of his team had received a security clearance, Leavitt stated that she was unsure but would follow up.
Reports indicate that Musk’s role is not a full-time federal position, but one that carries specific responsibilities. According to an unnamed source cited by CNN, Musk may have received top-secret clearance, though this has not been officially confirmed by the White House.
Musk has recently been active in coordinating a high-profile rescue mission involving two NASA astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been in space since last June. Originally launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, the mission faced technical issues including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions, preventing their return to Earth.
NASA and SpaceX had planned for the astronauts’ return using a SpaceX capsule, but delays in preparing the replacement crew postponed the mission. Overlapping crew rotations are standard practice to ensure a smooth handoff on the International Space Station.
On social media, Musk confirmed that SpaceX would assist in bringing the astronauts back safely, stating that they were ready to act as soon as possible. The capsule for their return is already in orbit, awaiting the arrival of the next crew.
Musk’s appointment as a leader in the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a team focused on streamlining federal operations—was announced alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who has since stepped down to pursue a separate political career.
While Musk’s role has stirred public interest and scrutiny, officials have emphasized the temporary nature of his appointment and the ongoing commitment to transparency regarding his involvement.
