New Details Surrounding Sudden Death

Respected Former U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber Passes Away at 43

Jessica Aber, a highly respected former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 43. She was found unresponsive in her Washington, D.C., home over the weekend. Authorities have indicated that she likely died of natural causes, and her family has since shared that she had been living with epilepsy for many years.

Aber’s sudden passing has left colleagues, friends, and family in deep mourning. A medical examiner will officially determine the exact cause of death, but her loved ones say she had long dealt with epileptic seizures—a condition known to pose rare but serious risks, particularly during sleep.

In a statement, her family said, “Our family is in shock and grieving deeply, and we respectfully request privacy as we attempt to navigate through our unspeakable loss.” They noted that they expect further details from the medical examiner in the coming weeks.

Aber had a distinguished career in public service, rising through the Department of Justice before being appointed U.S. Attorney in 2021. During her tenure, she led several high-profile cases, including those related to national security, cybercrime, and illegal technology exports. One of her most notable achievements was overseeing a major leak investigation involving classified documents and prosecuting executives involved in the illegal export of U.S. technology.

Those who worked closely with Aber described her as a brilliant legal mind and a deeply compassionate leader. “She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor,” said Erik S. Siebert, her interim successor. “She is simply irreplaceable as a human being.”

U.S. District Judge M. Hannah Lauck, who once had Aber as a law clerk, remembered her fondly. “Jess was brilliant, but far more important was her sense for justice, her humanity, and her ability to change the world in a positive way even during her brief time with us.”

Aber made history as one of the few women to lead the Eastern District of Virginia. Her dedication to justice and service left a lasting impact on the legal community and beyond.

Her legacy as a trailblazer and public servant will be remembered by many, as those who knew her mourn the loss of a remarkable individual taken far too soon.
