Trump Fires Back At Celebrity Boycott During His And Melania’s Surprise ‘Les Misérables’ Outing

When asked about the cast of Les Misérables boycotting his attendance, President Donald Trump said, “I couldn’t care less. All I do is run the country well.” He attended the Kennedy Center premiere with First Lady Melania Trump amid mixed reactions, including applause and some jeers.

Earlier, rumors claimed the Trumps, Vice President J.D. Vance, and his wife would attend the show, which was performed by understudies. There were warnings that drag queens might heckle the president, and some did protest nearby.

Since taking control of the Kennedy Center in February 2025, Trump removed its board and appointed Richard Grenell as executive director. This led some celebrities like Shonda Rhimes and Ben Folds to sever ties with the center. LGBTQ-related events, including Pride Month performances, were canceled or moved, sparking protests.

On the red carpet, Trump praised the venue and Grenell’s leadership, calling the center’s bones “incredible” and promising improvements. When asked about his first theater experience, Trump said it was likely Cats, while Melania said hers was Phantom of the Opera. Melania also shared she’s a fan of Les Misérables, which Trump said he has seen multiple times.

When asked if he identified more with Javert or Jean Valjean, Trump laughed and said, “That’s tough. You better answer that one, honey.” Melania remained silent.
