Federal Scrutiny Hits Political Figures Amid Allegations of Fraud and Citizenship Misrepresentation
Two high-profile political figures found themselves under intense federal scrutiny this week, as separate investigations raised serious legal and ethical concerns ahead of a volatile election season.

Call for Denaturalization of Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has formally called for an investigation into New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, requesting that federal authorities explore whether denaturalization proceedings should be initiated. The concern stems from allegations that Mamdani may have made false or misleading statements during his U.S. citizenship application.

According to reports, including a June 21 article by the New York Post, Mamdani publicly expressed solidarity with individuals previously convicted of terrorism-related offenses before gaining American citizenship. Critics point to statements and lyrics from his earlier years—particularly those related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict—as possible red flags.

“The naturalization process relies heavily on honesty and full disclosure of any past affiliations or views that might raise security concerns,” one legal expert said. “If it’s proven that information was intentionally concealed, it could form the basis for revoking citizenship under federal law.”

Mamdani, who made headlines after defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic mayoral nomination, has not yet publicly responded to the allegations. His campaign has so far declined to comment.

Massachusetts State Representative Faces Federal Charges
Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, Democratic State Representative Christopher Flanagan has been arrested on federal charges of wire fraud and falsifying records, following a detailed investigation into the alleged misuse of nonprofit funds.

Flanagan, who also served as the executive director of the Cape Cod Home Builders Association (HBA), is accused of siphoning more than $36,000 from the organization between November 2021 and January 2023. Federal prosecutors claim the funds were used to pay off personal debts, cover mortgage costs, and finance his political activities.

“Today’s indictment highlights a deeply troubling breach of public trust,” said U.S. Attorney Leah Foley. “Mr. Flanagan allegedly used his position to benefit himself, even going as far as to fabricate fake identities to conceal his actions.”

The Department of Justice outlined that despite Flanagan’s two jobs—his state role and leadership at the HBA—he was in serious financial distress, with thousands in credit card debt and repeated overdraft fees. Investigators say this financial pressure may have contributed to the alleged fraud.

He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Boston and has been released pending trial.

Federal Agencies Respond
Inspectors with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, who worked closely with the IRS and federal prosecutors, emphasized that public officials must be held to the same standards as any citizen.

“This arrest shows we will not allow elected officials to abuse their power for personal gain,” said Ketty Larco-Ward, the Inspector in Charge for the Boston Division. “The people of Massachusetts deserve integrity—not deception—from those they elect.”

As investigations continue, both Mamdani and Flanagan face mounting legal and public pressure. While no final judgments have been made, these developments underscore the growing spotlight on ethics and accountability in public service during a politically
