Valerie Bertinelli Opens Up About Regret Over What She Accepted in Past Relationships.

Valerie Bertinelli has spent decades in the public eye, first becoming widely known through television and later building a career that also included cooking programs, books, and appearances centered on everyday life. Along the way, she has spoken publicly about subjects that extend far beyond her professional work. Relationships, body image, grief, self-esteem, and emotional healing have all become part of the conversations she has chosen to share.

Rather than presenting personal growth as a simple transformation, Bertinelli has often described it as something that develops gradually, with old memories sometimes resurfacing in surprisingly ordinary moments. One example involved something as commonplace as a pair of jeans. Bertinelli previously shared a social-media video in which she laughed about the sound her jeans made as she walked. On its surface, the moment might have appeared insignificant.

For her, however, the sound was connected to a painful memory involving a disparaging comment about her body and exercise. She described experiences like this as emotional “hidden bruises,” using the phrase to explain how hurtful words can remain memorable long after a conversation has ended. What made the moment meaningful to Bertinelli was that her emotional response had changed. Instead of hearing the sound and immediately returning to the insecurity she once associated with it, she found herself laughing. She presented that change as evidence of the personal work she had been doing.

The jeans themselves had not changed, but the meaning she attached to them had. Something that once reminded her of criticism could instead represent her ability to move beyond the power that criticism previously held. Bertinelli’s reflections fit into a much broader public conversation she has had about self-acceptance.

Her appearance has been discussed publicly for much of her career, and she has addressed the pressure that can accompany years of outside commentary about weight and body image. In more recent years, her message has increasingly focused on moving away from defining personal worth through appearance. Her comments about the jeans were therefore not simply about clothing. They were connected to the larger question of how negative remarks can become internalized and how people may gradually learn to challenge them.

The actress has also discussed how difficult relationships affected the way she viewed herself. In an appearance on Dr. Ramani Durvasula’s Navigating Narcissism podcast, Bertinelli reflected on painful experiences from different periods of her romantic life. She distinguished the difficult parts of her first marriage from experiences she associated with later attempts at love. Her comments centered not simply on what other people had done, but also on how she was learning to understand her own responses and boundaries.

Bertinelli said she carried considerable shame about having remained in situations where she felt she had been treated poorly. That admission introduced an important distinction into the conversation. Someone can recognize inappropriate behavior and even object to it in the moment while still finding it difficult to leave a relationship. Knowing that a boundary has been crossed and deciding to end an important emotional connection are not necessarily the same process.

During the discussion, Dr. Ramani challenged the idea that Bertinelli should simply blame herself for having “allowed” mistreatment. The conversation explored how unhealthy relationship dynamics can make boundaries difficult to enforce. Bertinelli nevertheless emphasized that she had reached a point where she wanted to take responsibility for the decisions that remained within her control. For her, that included recognizing when enough was enough and choosing to walk away rather than continuing a destructive pattern.

That distinction between responsibility and self-blame became one of the more meaningful themes in her reflections. Taking responsibility for a future decision does not require accepting responsibility for another person’s hurtful behavior. Instead, Bertinelli described learning to recognize what she could control: whether she remained engaged, whether she continued an argument, and whether she stayed in a situation that was no longer healthy for her.

Boundaries can sound straightforward when described from a distance. In practice, however, setting one can produce additional conflict, particularly when two people disagree strongly about what is reasonable. A person may state clearly that a certain type of communication is unacceptable, only to encounter arguments, denial, pressure, or attempts to continue the discussion. Bertinelli described eventually reaching a stage where disengagement itself became an important response.

Her comments did not present emotional recovery as something that happened overnight. Instead, she spoke about recognizing patterns gradually. The jeans story provides a small but revealing example of that process. A memory that once carried embarrassment could eventually produce laughter. That does not mean the original experience suddenly became acceptable. It means the emotional association surrounding it no longer had exactly the same power.
