MY MOTHER-IN-LAW BROUGHT A “BETTER WIFE” FOR MY HUSBAND—RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME

My mother-in-law showed up unannounced, but she wasn’t alone. Beside her stood a young woman, smiling awkwardly.

“This is Lila,” she said, her voice all sugary. “The kind of woman I always pictured for my son.”

I laughed a little, waiting for her to say she was joking. She wasn’t.

“You should take notes from her,” she added. “She cooks and cleans like a real wife.”
My stomach dropped. I glanced at my husband, hoping he’d say something—anything.

Then, without warning, he stood up and said, “Mom, what are you doing?”
His voice was calm, but I could see the tension in his jaw. He walked over to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. “This is my wife. The only woman I need in my life.”
My mother-in-law’s smile faltered, but she quickly recovered. “Oh, don’t be dramatic, dear. I’m just looking out for you. Lila here is everything a man could want. She’s even trained in traditional homemaking. Isn’t that right, Lila?”
Lila nodded, her eyes darting between us like she was watching a tennis match. She looked uncomfortable, and I couldn’t blame her. Who agrees to something like this?

“Mom,” my husband said, his voice firmer now, “this is completely inappropriate. You can’t just show up at my house with another woman and expect me to… what? Trade in my wife like a used car?”
I almost laughed at the absurdity of it all, but the situation was too surreal. My mother-in-law had always been critical of me, but this was next-level. She’d never brought a literal replacement before.
“I’m just saying,” she continued, undeterred, “that Lila here could teach your wife a thing or two. Maybe then you’d have a proper home-cooked meal every night instead of… whatever it is you two eat.”
I opened my mouth to defend myself, but my husband beat me to it. “Mom, stop. I love my wife. I don’t need her to be a perfect homemaker. I need her to be my partner, my best friend. And she is.”
His words warmed my heart, but my mother-in-law wasn’t done. She crossed her arms and tilted her head, her expression dripping with condescension. “Well, if you’re happy living in chaos, that’s your choice. But don’t say I didn’t try to help.”
