Polar bear attacks woman who jumped into enclosure at Berlin Zoo

In the spring of 2009, a terrifying scene unfolded at Berlin Zoo when a 32-year-old woman, struggling with personal issues, jumped into the polar bear enclosure during a feeding session. The bears, focused on the food, were initially unaware, but one bear noticed her and attacked.

Visitors watched in horror as she attempted to escape but was pulled under by the bears multiple times. Zookeepers quickly responded, throwing life rings and distracting the bears until they could rescue her. She was hospitalized with multiple injuries but survived.

The woman, Mandy K., was dealing with significant personal challenges, including losing her job and going through a breakup. Authorities stated she had endangered herself, the bears, and zoo staff, and the zoo confirmed no changes would be made to security, as determined individuals could always find a way in.

This incident followed a similar one in 2008 when a man entered the enclosure with the famous polar bear Knut.
