My Husband Begged for a Son and Promised to Stay Home with Him, but After the Baby Was Born, He Forced Me to Quit My Career

When my husband, Nick, begged for a son, he promised he’d stay home and raise him while I continued to build my career. But the moment our baby was born, everything changed, and suddenly, he was pressuring me to give up everything I had worked for.

I had married Nick thinking I knew who he was. We had been together for five years—laughing together, fighting rarely, always feeling like a team. Nick was charming, funny, and an all-around great guy. He worked in marketing, while I was an attorney at a top law firm, making a salary far higher than his. We were fine with our arrangement, until Nick started talking about having a son. He spoke about it constantly—dreams of teaching him baseball, fixing up a car together, giving him all the things he never had. I wasn’t against kids, but my career was my priority. Nick never pushed me, though. He promised that when we had a son, he’d stay home with him. I wouldn’t have to give up my career. I believed him.

Two years later, I saw those two pink lines on a pregnancy test. Nick was ecstatic. “A boy! I just know it!” he shouted, lifting me off the ground and spinning me around. When the doctor confirmed it, Nick was on cloud nine. “I’m going to be a stay-at-home dad,” he told anyone who would listen, his face beaming. I couldn’t help but smile at his excitement.

Pregnancy was tough, but Nick’s enthusiasm made it bearable. We decorated the nursery together, and he practiced swaddling a stuffed bear to make sure he’d get it right. When the day finally came, and we brought our son home, everything seemed perfect. Then things started to shift.

The first week was chaotic—sleepless nights, a crying baby, and nonstop exhaustion. But I kept telling myself Nick had this. He was the one who promised to stay home, after all. Slowly, though, the excuses started. “Can you change him? I just sat down.” “Can you take over? He’s fussy, and I have a headache.” I was balancing work emails with breastfeeding, trying to do it all, and still telling myself that he was just adjusting.
