Single dad of four

Ricky, a single father from Jackson, Mississippi, faces the daunting challenge of raising four young daughters after his wife passed away when their youngest was just five months old. The weight of this responsibility, combined with the daily grind of school runs, meals, chores, and providing for his family, leaves him little time for himself. “I do my best to keep this family together,” he says, revealing the exhaustion and pride in his voice. Despite the constant hustle, Ricky is committed to making his daughters’ lives the best they can be, driven by a deep sense of duty and love.

Ricky knows the path ahead is tough. “Let’s be honest, things won’t get any easier from here on,” he shares, acknowledging the added difficulties of being a single father with four children. The loneliness of his situation is ever-present, and he questions, “What woman is going to accept me with four children and be like ‘oh yes I will take care of them?’” He sees his role as a father as a calling, “a burden from Jesus,” which he must accept and manage. Ricky approaches parenting with strict discipline, aiming to raise his daughters into strong, responsible women.

Recently, Ricky had a tense confrontation with his mother-in-law, who has been a key support figure since the loss of his own parents. During a visit, she criticized his approach to parenting, particularly his decision to have his daughters do chores at just five years old. “She believes kids should just be kids while they’re still young,” Ricky explains. Ricky, however, defends his method, saying, “I want them to learn the hard things first. Life is not easy.” When the disagreement escalated, his mother-in-law threatened to call social services. “If you continue like this, I am calling the social service,” she warned. This was the breaking point for Ricky, who angrily demanded she leave. “Get out of my house RIGHT NOW,” he ordered, feeling betrayed by the threat.

Ricky’s worst fear came true a few days later when a social worker arrived at his door in response to the report his mother-in-law had made. “Mr. Ricky, we received a report and need to conduct an assessment,” the social worker said. The visit was stressful, with probing questions that made Ricky fear for his family’s future. He reassured his daughters, “Everything’s going to be fine,” but the tension in the house was palpable. Fortunately, after the investigation, the social worker concluded that the children were well cared for, and Ricky was found to be a dedicated and loving father. Despite the strain on his relationship with his mother-in-law, Ricky’s resilience had won out. “I am trying to make their life the best possible,” he says, his resolve unwavering. His story is one of deep love, determination, and the strength to face any challenge for the sake of his children.
