This man loses £243m – but he’s still way richer than King Charles

The Duke of Westminster saw his net worth drop this year, but he is still the second richest person under 40 in the UK, according to new figures.
Hugh Grosvenor, the seventh Duke of Westminster, lost a remarkable £243 million last year but remains the second richest person in the UK under 40, according to fresh estimates. The 42-year-old aristocrat, who is godfather to Prince George and Prince Archie, saw his and his family’s net fortune fall to £9.8 billion, down from £10.1 billion in 2024, according to The Sunday Times’ Rich List.

In 2016, Hughie, as he is known to friends and family, inherited his father’s title and possession of the ancient Grosvenor Estate, making him an instant billionaire. He received his title as well as a large land and property portfolio when he was 25 years old.

The Duke’s riches is derived from The Grosvenor Group, which, according to the Sunday Times, is in charge of various developments in city centers in the northwest of England, including Liverpool One, where it is a partner in a £10 million initiative to build an urban leisure complex.

The report continued: “One of 33 godchildren of the King, the duke is also related to Russia’s Romanov imperial family and the writer Alexander Pushkin through his mother, Natalia.”

Charles, who took the throne in 2022, placed equal 238th among the UK’s 350 wealthiest individuals and families, up 20 places from 258th in 2024.

The 76-year-old king, who has had a difficult year as he continues to get cancer treatment, has derived the majority of his riches from an investment portfolio inherited from his late mother, according to the newspaper.

His personal fortune includes the Queen’s private properties, Sandringham in Norfolk and Balmoral in Aberdeenshire.

The Sunday Times only considers personal assets when measuring the sovereign’s wealth.

This excludes the Crown Estate, which achieved record revenues due to wind farm transactions, the Duchy of Lancaster estate, and the Crown Jewels, which are held in trust by the King for the nation.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Westminster is close to the Prince and Princess of Wales, who named him godfather of their eldest son, George, in 2013.
