Republican Rep. Buddy Carter of Georgia has called on the Department of Justice to launch an investigation into organizations funded by billionaire donor George Soros, citing concerns over possible involvement in politically motivated violence, a report said on Thursday.
In a letter sent Thursday to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Carter called for a “comprehensive and immediate” investigation into the Open Society Foundations and other groups backed by billionaire megadonor George Soros to “determine whether they are in violation of any federal laws related to domestic terrorism, material support for violence, or other illegal activities targeting Americans based on political beliefs.”
The Daily Caller was first to report the development.
“There is growing concern, based on credible reporting, that George Soros’ Open Society Foundations have played a significant role in funding organizations associated with promoting political extremism and engage in or endorse actions that meet the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s definition of domestic terrorism,” Carter wrote.
“The funding of organizations that engage in, support, or incite political violence must not be tolerated,” Carter, who is running to unseat Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff next year, added.
Carter’s request references a recent report from the Capital Research Center (CRC) that found billionaire George Soros, through his Open Society Foundations, directed more than $80 million to organizations that allegedly “engage in or endorse” activities meeting the FBI’s definition of domestic terrorism.
According to the report, one such group — the Center for Third World Organizing (CTWO) — received $400,000 in funding and publicly stated that it “threw down with people in the streets” during the 2020 George Floyd riots, the Caller added.
The Capital Research Center report also found that the Center for Third World Organizing (CTWO) has served as an umbrella for several radical groups, including the Ruckus Society, whose founders and training materials have endorsed tactics that “may be outside of the law.” The network further encompasses the BlackOUT Collective, which co-authored a pro-Hamas guide that glorified the Oct. 7 attack on Israel and cited a Ruckus Society manual promoting property destruction and blockades.
According to the report, the Open Society Foundations provided $1.85 million to Dream Defenders, $18 million to the Movement for Black Lives, and $200,000 to Dissenters — another group involved in producing the pro-Hamas guide, said the outlet.
The report also highlighted the Sunrise Movement, which received at least $2 million from the Open Society Foundations. The organization has promoted the Stop Cop City/Defend the Atlanta Forest coalition, a movement that federal officials have linked to Antifa-associated anarchist activity.
In his letter to the DOJ, Carter highlighted an “escalation in politically motivated violence from far-left extremist groups,” in which he cited recent attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities and the Sept. 10 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk by a man allegedly motivated by hatred of Kirk’s “political expression.”
The Open Society Foundations released a statement regarding Carter’s letter.
“Our activities are peaceful and lawful, and our grantees are expected to abide by human rights principles and comply with the law,” the foundation stated. “These accusations are politically motivated attacks on civil society, meant to silence speech the administration disagrees with and undermine the First Amendment right to free speech.”
The Trump administration has already begun an investigation into left-wing organizations suspected of funding violence.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced Wednesday that the bureau is “following the money” behind Antifa and other far-left militant groups, launching an unprecedented financial investigation aimed at dismantling every donor network, funding mechanism, and organizational link supporting domestic extremism.
“We are following the money. Money never lies,” Patel said during a briefing alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “And that’s what it’s going to take to bring down this network of organized criminal thugs, gang bangers, and yes, domestic terrorists — because that’s what they are.”
Patel said the FBI is working closely with the Treasury Department to map out the web of accounts and entities used to finance Antifa’s operations across the United States and abroad.
