As the Schumer Shutdown drags into its second week, Republican leaders are warning of devastating consequences for military families facing missed paychecks and growing financial strain.
Republican Study Committee Chairman Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, a former Air Force officer, said he’s hearing directly from service members whose families are struggling to make ends meet as Democrats continue to block funding bills, Townhall reported.
Pfluger, who served his country with distinction, said the situation has left troops wondering how they will afford their next meal.
“During [a shutdown] you can’t focus on the mission or the threat,” Pfluger said. “Our commanders today — and quite frankly all of our personnel — are having to focus on whether or not they’re going to be able to make ends meet. Those that are deployed — the stress that they already endure with deployments is now triple, quadruple, because now their spouses are at home, maybe with new babies, wondering if they’re going to be able to put food on the table.”
Pfluger was joined by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., on an exclusive press call with reporters on October 10. All three men previously chaired the Republican Study Committee.
The lawmakers blasted Democrats for allowing the shutdown to drag on and accused Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of putting his political ambitions ahead of the nation’s military and federal workforce.
“This shutdown isn’t about helping everyday Americans — it’s about Chuck Schumer’s raw fear of his radical base turning on him,” Pfluger said.
The Texas congressman also pointed to a remark from a senior Democratic aide, who reportedly said the party “won’t budge short of planes falling out of the sky.” Pfluger called it a “vile and deeply offensive” statement that shows “how little empathy the Left has for those who serve.”
Speaker Johnson said Democrats are “modern-day profiles in fear and cowardice,” accusing Schumer of surrendering to far-left activists.
“They know there is one party that has voted to open the government eight times,” Johnson said. “None of them want to feel that same level of heat, so they’re just going along, but they’re privately very nervous.”
Johnson said Democrats’ refusal to act is driven by panic over losing control of their base. “It’s not about policy wins for families or security — it’s Schumer’s desperation to appease the most radical elements of their socialist, Marxist base,” he said.
Scalise called the shutdown a “self-inflicted wound” and said Schumer’s “fear of a primary challenge from the Left” is now threatening military families across the country.
“He’s more concerned about his political career than he is about the fate of families all across this country,” Scalise said. “A third of military families live paycheck to paycheck, and Democrats are blocking votes to pay troops, TSA agents, and Border Patrol — all while gloating about the chaos.”
Pfluger, Johnson, and Scalise said the Republican majority remains united behind President Donald Trump and Senate GOP leaders in their demand for responsible spending.
“The Right is united like never before,” Johnson said. “There’s zero daylight between President Trump, Senate Republicans, and the House GOP.”
He noted that House Republicans already passed a clean continuing resolution weeks ago to give both chambers more time to negotiate a longer-term deal, but Democrats refused to act.
Pfluger challenged Democrats to see the consequences firsthand. “Ask your Democratic leaders why they aren’t going to military bases and getting a sense of the pain they’re inflicting,” he said. “Instead of parading around Washington, D.C., they should visit a base.”
